How to have your AI agent automatically read Discord messages and auto reply (2026): bot, selfbot or your own account

Prompt template

Read my latest Discord DMs and the messages that mention me in server name, skip the ones I already answered, draft a reply to each one that needs me, in my tone, and send the ones I approve.

Short answer

To have your AI agent automatically read Discord messages and reply, first decide who the replies come from. As a bot, in a server you run, add an AI bot or connect your agent to a bot. As you, in your DMs and the servers you joined, a bot cannot help: it never sees your DMs. Then the choice is a selfbot, which needs your user token, or an agent that reads and replies from your own signed-in Chrome. This guide is for community managers, founders and anyone whose DMs and mentions pile up faster than they can answer.

Why it's hard

  • A bot is not you. It posts with a bot tag, someone with the Manage Server permission must add it to each server, and it never reads the messages people send to you.
  • A selfbot is not allowed. Discord's support page on automated user accounts forbids automating a normal account outside the bot API, and a selfbot holds your user token, which works like your password.
  • ChatGPT and Claude cannot read Discord. Neither has a connector for your Discord account.

Way 1: an AI bot, in a server you run

As each product's own page describes it, read on November 1, 2026.

  • Dyno's autoresponder: in Dyno's dashboard, open your server, the Modules tab, then Autoresponder, and set a reply for each trigger. It answers fixed triggers, not free questions.
  • Quickchat AI: create an AI bot that answers from your own docs, invite it to your server, and members @mention it. No code; free to start.
  • Your own agent as a bot: platforms such as AgenticFlow deploy an AI agent as a Discord bot, and Anthropic's Discord plugin connects a Claude Code session to Discord through a bot you create.

Best for answering everyone in your own server, all the time. It replies as the bot, and only in servers where it was added.

Way 2: a selfbot

Open-source AI selfbots log in with your user token and answer as you when a trigger or a mention comes in. They reach your DMs, and they break Discord's rules; their own READMEs warn that an account can be banned.

Way 3: your agent, as you, with Reduck

Reduck connects Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP client to Discord through your own Chrome, where you are already signed in. Your agent reads your DMs and the messages that mention you, writes a reply to each one that needs you, and sends it as you, as a real Discord reply. It runs on a schedule or after your approval, with no bot, no token and no password.

How Reduck does it

  1. whoami gives your agent your Discord user id.
  2. list_dms lists your one-to-one and group DMs, most recent first, and read_messages reads each one, newest first.
  3. search_messages finds the messages that mention you in a server, with Discord's own search.
  4. The agent skips the conversations you already answered and drafts a reply to each one that needs you.
  5. reply_to_message sends a reply to a message in a server, shown as a reply in Discord, and send_dm answers a DM, returning the recipient it resolved.

To make it automatic, run the same prompt on a schedule: in Claude Code, /loop 15m followed by the prompt runs it every 15 minutes while Claude Code stays open.

How to start

  1. Create a free account at reduck.ai.
  2. Install the Reduck extension in Chrome and pair it.
  3. Connect Reduck to your agent: docs.reduck.ai.
  4. Ask: "Read my latest Discord DMs and the messages that mention me in {server name}, skip the ones I already answered, draft a reply to each one that needs me, in my tone, and send the ones I approve."

The three ways, compared

Replies show up as Reads your DMs Works in servers you only joined Your secret Runs

Selfbot You Yes Yes Your user token Always on
Reduck You Yes Yes None On your agent's schedule, or after your OK

FAQ

Pick who the replies come from. As a bot, in a server you run: add an AI bot or connect your agent to a bot you create. As you, in your DMs and the servers you joined: connect your agent to Discord with Reduck, then run a prompt that reads your DMs and mentions and replies, on a schedule (for example /loop in Claude Code) or after your approval.
No. A bot only sees the servers it was added to and the messages sent to the bot itself. Messages people send to you go to your account, which a bot cannot read.
No. A selfbot logs in with your user token and stays connected, which Discord forbids and which hands a program a token that works like your password. Reduck replies as you from the Discord tab you are already signed in to, with no token, only when your agent calls it.
Yes. Ask the agent to show you each draft and send only the ones you approve. Replying and sending a DM are marked as writes, so a client that asks before a write asks you each time.
No. Reduck runs in your own Chrome, so automatic replies run while your agent runs on its schedule and that Chrome is open, signed in to Discord. A bot runs on a server and answers all the time.
A bot is the route Discord designs for. Discord forbids automating a normal user account outside its bot API and says it can lead to account termination. Replying from your own account on a schedule is automation of your account; approving each reply keeps the pace of a person.

Discord auto reply with your AI agent

Let Claude, ChatGPT or any AI agent automatically read your Discord DMs and the messages that mention you, and answer them from your own account, through the Reduck MCP. Run it on a schedule to reply on its own, or keep a draft-and-approve step. No bot to add, no selfbot, no user token to paste.

Discord MCP

A Discord MCP server that acts as your own user account, not as a bot. Reduck gives ChatGPT, Claude or any MCP client tools to read your servers, channels and DMs and reply as you, through browser automation in your own Chrome, with no bot to invite and no user token to paste.

Best Discord MCP servers

Discord has no official MCP server, so every Discord MCP is a community project or a hosted service. We compare the bot-token servers (SaseQ, hanweg, barryyip0625, v-3), the hosted connectors (Composio, Zapier, Docker's catalog), Anthropic's Discord plugin for Claude Code, the selfbot servers, and Reduck, on what each reads, how it signs in and whether it reaches your DMs.
