How to do SEO keyword research for free with Google Trends, Autocomplete and Ahrefs (2026)

Prompt template

Find the queries people search most about topic in country. Compare the main candidates on Google Trends, expand the strongest with Google Autocomplete, get each phrasing's monthly search volume from Ahrefs, and report the ones worth a page.

Overview

Before writing a page, you want to know which words people actually search, and how many of them do. Most keyword ideas die on one of two questions: does anyone type this, and is there a bigger way to say it? Answering both by hand means three tools, three tabs and a spreadsheet.

Why it's hard

Each free tool answers only part of the question. Google Trends compares terms but gives no volume. Google Autocomplete shows what people type but gives no numbers, and it changes with your location. Ahrefs gives volume, but only as a range and only for the seed you give it. On their own, each one points the wrong way.

How Reduck does it

Your agent runs the three in order, in your own browser or a cloud one in the right country:

  1. Google Trends ranks the options. For apartments in the US, Zillow rentals scored 71, apartments.com 69 and Craigslist apartments 36, and "craigslist sf apartments for rent" was rising 90%.
  2. Google Autocomplete turns a seed into what people type. "resy notify" becomes "resy notify not working" and "resy notify not saving": the people whose built-in alert failed.
  3. Ahrefs puts a volume on each phrasing. "how to find an apartment" gets more than 1,000 searches a month; "apartment search ai" fewer than 100.

Together they showed that the volume sits in the plain question and in brand plus place, not in automation wording. That decides which page to write.

What your agent does

  • Compare up to 5 keywords on Google Trends, with top and rising related queries
  • Expand the strongest seeds into real phrasings with Google Autocomplete, in the country you target
  • Read monthly search volume and difficulty for each phrasing on Ahrefs
  • Report the queries worth a page, with volume, trend and difficulty side by side

Who it's for

  • Founders and marketers choosing what to write next
  • SEO and content teams validating a keyword list before a brief
  • Anyone checking whether people search for a problem before building for it

FAQ

Google announced an official Trends API in July 2025, as an alpha. Without access to it, your agent reads Trends' explore page in your own browser and returns interest over time, by region, and the top and rising related queries as data.
Ahrefs' free keyword generator gives a monthly volume range and a difficulty for each keyword idea, with no account. Your agent reads it for each seed, one after another.
Suggestions follow the browser's location. Run the autocomplete step on a cloud browser in that country, for example the United States, to see what people there type.
Both. Trends compares terms on one relative scale and shows which phrasings are rising; Ahrefs puts an absolute monthly range on each phrasing. Autocomplete sits between them and gives the exact wording.
No. It measures what people type into Google. What an AI assistant types for the same question has to be read from the assistant's own searches.
